Hospitalisation

Hospitalisation may be required when your pet is particularly poorly. There are many scenarios when hospitalisation may be needed, such as:

  • When your pet is dehydrated, or if hydration cannot be maintained 

  • If your pet is not eating (anorexic)

  • Treatment of shock

  • Monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory status, e.g.

    • Heart rate, rhythm and sounds

    • Pulse rate and quality

    • Mucous membrane colour and capillary refill time

    • Blood pressure

    • Blood oxygenation

    • Respiratory rate and effort​

    • Lung sounds​

  • When injectable medications are required​

    • This may be the case if your pet will not take or keep down oral medications

    • Some conditions also specifically require this​​​​
